Inside your Shoebox
// Emily Pearson
A New Missions pastor in Haiti recently interviewed our students regarding the contents of the shoeboxes they’ve been given.
“Which items are you happy to receive?” he asked. The items they mentioned first might shock you. “Soap…toothbrush...washcloth…” The fun contents such as soccer balls and hairbows were listed after the necessities.
Practical hygiene items are hard to obtain for many Haitian families. While they may seem to be boring or uncreative items for a shoebox, please know that they mean just as much as the toys, coloring books, markers, and stuffed animals that you include.
Our pre-packed shoeboxes this year will include a reusable toiletry bag containing hygiene items, as well as a spoon to use at home and school. Each gift is carefully chosen for boys and girls of varying ages. Also, tucked inside will be a Haitian Creole or French New Testament for the older students, and the Jesus Storybook Bible for our younger ones.
If you plan to assemble a shoebox gift yourself, many of the previously mentioned elements are wonderful choices. In addition, consider a journal, pens, pencils, socks, underwear, a t-shirt or a packable dress. Your generosity makes an impact for God’s kingdom!
