Shoebox Surprises
// Jeanne DeTellis Loudon
Many of our children literally hug their Christmas shoeboxes and have already been warned by their parents not to open their gift until they are home from school.
But, they try to peek inside—especially if it is a clear plastic shoebox.
Inside there may be a poncho for rainy days, nail clippers, emery boards, and a toothbrush. Does someone need a screwdriver or a flashlight? Multiple face cloths and several bars of soap are wonderful for freshening up after a long, hot day. Also, a plastic soap box helps the soap last much longer. How about including a few gallon-sized Ziploc bags to protect their precious family documents? French dictionaries are always helpful. Some other great ideas include: a deck of cards, dominos, shampoo, deodorant, underwear, sunglasses, and a harmonica.
You can also include sewing items such as buttons, needles, thread, and zippers. Girls of all ages appreciate hair ribbons, barrettes, and jewelry. I’m sure by now you are adding your own ideas to this list to bring about the biggest smiles this Christmas. There is no limit to the number of shoeboxes you can pack with love for our students and their families.
Hats off to all Christmas shoebox packers! And don’t forget to include at least one hat of any style, size, or color to protect from the sun ~Jeanne DeTellis Loudon
