Recently, some of our high school boys in the DR had the opportunity to compete in a local basketball competition.

Prior to this competition, we did not have a formal basketball team at the school, so the boys had to work extra hard to learn to play together as a team. Our physical education teacher, Omarlin Juma, worked with the boys every afternoon to get them ready. Many of them did not have proper basketball shoes so he helped them get some.

Our players practiced together for weeks to get ready for the competition and their efforts paid off! Many thanks to the Foundation Academy in Winter Garden, FL, for donating the jerseys worn in the championship game.

All of the other teams in the competition had formal basketball teams that practiced regularly. Our team showed up as the underdog with no jerseys or sponsors…but they all had the desire to play to win!  Although there were many people who thought our team would lose in the first round, they won their first game by one point! They kept winning games and went on to win the competition! Teacher Juma thanks God for His help and is grateful to all of the boys who worked so hard to bring home the trophy! As you can imagine, we are now in the process of getting uniforms and forming a permanent basketball team! ~Heather Williams Katz
