Christ's church will never fail. That was Pastor Yaguel Nerat's message this past Sunday to a huge crowd at his church in Bord-Mer, Haiti. Old and young alike came. They raised their hands to praise and worship God.  The huge crowds surprised Pastor Yaguel. For months, like many churches all across the world, the coronavirus pandemic forced people to stay at home. But recently, the churches in Haiti began to meet again in person and the church has been packed.

The Haitian churches in Signeau, Leogane Guillaume, and Leogane Leroy have also seen large numbers.  "I think people are thirsty for worshipping God,” Pastor Yaguel said. While there have been many challenges during this time, Pastor Yaguel's faith and his mission to see more people come to know Christ have remained strong.  "It's a joy to see people love Christ despite their situation." No doubt, Haiti has seen its fair share of trials and tribulations:  government unrest, poverty, and earthquakes. Now, they've battled the coronavirus. While living in Haiti is not easy, Pastor Yaguel knows there is hope in Jesus, and Christ's church will never fail.

Church is important to these Haitians, and Pastor Yaguel seized the opportunity to encourage and motivate the people to continue God's work with Matthew 16:18, "And I tell you that you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hades will not overcome it."  When Jesus referred to Peter by name, He used the word for a small, movable stone like a pebble. The word rock in Greek is "petra." It means an immovable foundation. Jesus was saying the church would not be built on Peter "the pebble" but upon Jesus Christ, the solid rock, the immovable foundation, and cornerstone! No matter the challenges, no matter the struggles, Pastor Yaguel knows he and the church need to be laser-focused. There is still much work to be done.

Pastor Yaguel Nerat has been a pastor with New Missions since April 2012. He is a graduate of New Missions and started school with us at the age of four.

We can all learn a lesson from Pastor Yaguel's sermon.  Christ is the foundation of the church. Whatever problems or situations we may face, they will not shake us because of that immovable foundation—our faith in Jesus Christ. Christ's church will never fail!
